Relieved!

Starting tomorrow I'll be heading back to work at the factory! It's just part time and 3 days a week but 17 hours is a lot better than the 5 hours I've been getting the past few months.

This money will (which I hope will improve to fulltime hours of mostly baking on the roof in the summer again) go a long way to paying for school in September as well as paying off my Line of Credit, which is not that big of a debt, but a debt period, and not enjoyable.

Needless to say I'm very relieved and happy at the moment and things just seem to be a little brighter even though as I'm writing this it's 10:30pm at night!

And The Band Played On

Late last night I was getting tired of reading my book and so I decided to flip on the TV to see what was on. As I was changing the channels I came across a movie on Bravo! I saw some actor I couldn't place so I kept watching to see who the guy was. Two hours later I've finished one of the better movies I've seen in a while.

It's called And The Band Marches On and was a made for TV movie back in 1993. It has a huge cast of stars including Ian McKellan, Allan Alda, Lilly Tomlin and Phil Collins, just to name a few. It revolves around the origin of the disease we've all come to know as HIV/AIDS.

It follows the behind the scenes story from the early days of the disease to it's ultimate indentification. It also chronicles the politics that would go into such a drastic overhaul of the way certain medical practices were undertaken.

I had never really looked into the subject other than in passing, so this movie opened my eyes quite a bit to the struggles the people who were the first among millions in dealing with this horrible illness.

The protaganist is a young Matthew Modine - who I've since come to realize was the sleezy land developer from Showtime's Weeds - a young and ambitious scientist in the fight to find out where this unknown virus came from. He's working with others at the Center for Disease Control (CDC) who, strapped by lack of funding from the Reagan administration, have to try and find the origins of a disease that's killing and infecting hundreds of homosexual men every time they blinked.

During that time however, it was played out as a disease or cancer affecting only gay men, therefore ostracising an entire community of people who had just recently began their fight to be more open about who they were.

If you can find this movie anywhere I recommend giving it a watch. It's especially eye-opening if you've never really paid much attention to the early days of the disease we hear so much about today.

It's been awhile...

This week, after pretty much neglecting this blog for a good chunk of a year, I got the itch to give it a go again. This is nothing new really, I've actually always wanted to continue blogging, it's just that I really didn't have much to blog about. Thankfully Monika started writing again and commented on my blog just as I was having the very same thoughts as her!

After I noticed my blog becoming monotonous in the sense that I was really only writing in it to rehatch my daily goings-on, I tried to take a different approach. I started writing about things that interested me in the news, or through conversations and the like. This quickly became boring and uninteresting to me, however.

So now I'm going to try and start anew. I'll give this a test run to see if I've still got the interest and if I do I'll obviously keep going. If not, then bye bye again.

Anyways, on to the topic I guess... It's been awhile...

It sure has. So let me quickly give the run-down on how things have gone for me since the end of April:
  • Did the whole graduation thing and got my diploma in Advanced Journalism
  • Thought I'd take a break and work at the factory to earn some cash and tan on the roof
  • Ended up getting my hours cut a month or so later
  • Officially started a relationship that has since been going on for nearly 8 months and shows no signs of stopping :)
  • Went to visit mah buddy Monika in the 2nd best city in Canada (Montreal.. yeah i know, it's not Vancouver like one would think ;)
  • Went camping for a weekend just north of Toronto with a bunch of my friends and girlfriend
  • Went to Darien Lake for Labour Day and had an awesome time
  • Finally I've just recently decided that I'm finally going to apply for school in September to the post-grad Corporate Communications/Public Relations course. On the condition that I don't find a solid journalism related job before then

So in a nutshell that's what my life's been like for the past while. I hope to continue blogging about it and many other things in the future!

Blogger rejuvination?

Hey to everyone who has probably stopped coming to visit my blog over the past eight months or so! Thanks to a little nudge by Monika I will at least be giving an effort to write more, but I can't promise anything.

Anyway this is just a heads up for things to come.

Take Care.
